🗣️ Shaping the inner voice of future generations
Dr. Jim Loehr, an expert in mental toughness, discusses the importance of the stories we tell ourselves and how they impact success. He shares reflection questions, the power of rituals for anxiety, and effective recovery time usage. Topics include empowering narratives, shaping inner voices for growth, peak performance secrets, and internal/external control for success. Here’s what caught by attention the most:
Ever wonder about the voice inside your head? That constant chatter that's always commenting on your life? It turns out, it's not just random noise. It's a strong influence on our lives, and the surprising part is that we often get it from our parents.
The way your parents spoke to you becomes your inner monologue. It's like a generational hand-me-down, but instead of old clothes, it's a mental soundtrack. Now, some might argue that tough love is necessary to prepare kids for a harsh world. But there's a fine line between constructive criticism and creating an inner critic that constantly tears you down.
So, what can we do? First, tune into your own inner voice. Is it a supportive coach or a relentless drill sergeant? Would you want your kids to inherit that voice? Remember, your public voice to your children becomes their private voice.
It's a huge responsibility. You're not just raising kids; you're shaping the soundtrack of their lives. The goal isn't to coddle, but to create an inner voice that's truthful, strong, and supportive. One that helps them face life's challenges without fighting a constant internal battle.
⏳ Too late is a lie
Too Late is a construct, one I don’t need to buy into. Too Late reduces the power of possibility. Too Late is a lie, one meant to keep us from imagining new futures for ourselves and the world. Too Late doesn’t need to be a rule I constrict myself with. Too Late leaves so little room for what could be.
🪩 When was the last time you threw a party?
Every now and then throw a memorable party. The price will be steep, but long afterwards you will remember the party, whereas you won’t remember how much is in your checking account. When was the last time you threw a party?
Forget trying to decide what your life’s destiny is. That’s too grand. Instead, just figure out what you should do in the next 2 years. Do you know what you know where you want to be in the next 2 years?
Never hesitate to invest in yourself—to pay for a class, a course, or a new skill. These modest expenditures pay outsized dividends. What’s the last course or class you took?
You can become the world’s best in something primarily by caring more about it than anyone else.
Where you live—what city, what country—has more impact on your well-being than any other factor. Where you live is one of the few things in your life you can choose and change. Did you choose your city or it chose you?
There should be at least one thing in your life you enjoy despite being no good at it. This is your playtime, which will keep you young. Never apologize for it.
Changing your mind about important things is not a consequence of stupidity, but a sign of intelligence.
What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important. To get the important stuff done, avoid the demands of the urgent. Read more about Eisenhower's famous prioritization framework.
📌 Making your mark on the world
I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatsoever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no ‘brief candle’ to me; it is a sort of splendid torch which I’ve got a hold of for the moment and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.
