😶🌫️ We Are Not The Cloud Of Sadness
Emotional reactions to behaviors are often the first drafts, the initial responses that need to be revised and refined. However, we tend to fuse our identities with our emotions, claiming "I am sad" or "I am angry" instead of observing "I'm noticing that I'm feeling sad". This fusion obscures our true selves, our values, and our capacity to handle emotions. The goal is to create a linguistic space that separates us from our emotions, enabling us to experience them without being defined by them. We are not the cloud of sadness. We are the sky, capable of experiencing all emotions and choosing who we want to be. Moreover, language has a crucial role in how we perceive emotions. For instance, Spanish differentiates between a temporary state ("I am feeling angry") and a permanent state ("I am angry"). This distinction can offer a more nuanced understanding of emotions.
🎉 Sometimes Success is…
Sometimes success is going to the gym because you told yourself you would. Sometimes success is being kind even when someone doesn’t deserve it. Sometimes success is forgiving yourself for your mistakes. Sometimes success is avoiding regret. Sometimes success is a smile. Sometimes success is going to bed on time. Sometimes success is choosing integrity. Sometimes success is doing what you know you should do when you feel like doing it the least.
🍂 The Knowing That Nothing Lasts
What feels most important is no longer waiting for an arrival anywhere. And this knowing of no arrival might be what makes allowing change to feel more possible. This knowing that nothing lasts might be what makes leaning into transformation and a vision of What Could Be more accessible while they’re here. This knowing of impermanence might be what lets the cloak of protection fall to the ground more often.
🌱 Raising Kids with High Emotional Intelligence
When children experience disappointment, they often feel it deeply. However, parents sometimes unintentionally invalidate their child's feelings, leading to a conflict between the child's true emotions and the emotions they believe they should be feeling. Imagine life as a garden full of benches, each representing a different emotion or experience. When a child expresses disappointment, they're sitting on the 'disappointment' bench. Instead of acknowledging the child's emotions and sitting beside them on this bench, parents often try to lead the child to a 'sunnier' bench. This can be harmful, as it teaches the child to repress or deny certain emotions. Instead, parents should help their child trust their emotions by saying three things: "I am so glad you're talking to me about this," which shows interest in the child's feelings; "I believe you," which validates the child's emotions; and "Tell me more," which encourages the child to further express their feelings. This approach not only builds confidence but also aids the child in learning to regulate their emotions.
There's a part of me that can't help but believe that if more parents had been attentive to their children's emotions, cultivating in them a heightened awareness of their own feelings and those of others, perhaps the 21st century wouldn't be so facing all these wars and atrocities.
